How I Spent My Summer Vacation...

I am working this summer as lead baker/lead breakfast cook (actually the only baker or breakfast cook) at a 4-H camp in Lincolnville, Maine. I've been fascinated with New England for years and I HATE summer weather in Missouri. This is going to be a great experience! Hopefully it will be good enough culinary experience to get interviews when I get home. I messed around buying tickets and had to take Greyhound (which I'll never do again except in dire desperation). After 36 hours on buses I got to Portland with dirty clothes and icky hair but so very excited! I don't start staying at camp until tomorrow night but I've had a ball hanging out with an online knitting buddy, Elizabeth, in the meantime. A friend of hers, Ellie, met me at the bus station in Portland. We had a great time sightseeing on our way to meet Elizabeth for lunch.

Portsmouth, New Hampshire! If you've followed my blog long and remember the menu project from culinary school you will understand just how thrilling this was! We only stopped the bus for a few minutes but I had to get off and breathe the Portsmouth air. I think the driver was ready to call the men in white to get me.

Ellie & I went to this map store. I can't remember the name of it but I'm dying to go back! She also drove me past LLBean in Freeport and we went shopping at a place called Big Al's. Al taught me to say that I am "from away" instead of "from out of town".

This is where we met Elizabeth for lunch. It was SOOOOO good!

Today we stayed busy! First, we hit up three farmers markets. This one is here in Lincolnville:

Everyone is getting this dude's products for Christmas. Act surprised.

Fresh dairy stuff! You can get a cup of coffee from this guy and if you're the one to open the milk to use it first and if you are too selfish to shake it up, you get the cream on top in your coffee. YUM!!!
